Atte Bower Short Mat Bowls Club has been meeting and playing since 1994, making this year our 29th anniversary year, and we still have some of the founder members playing regularly. Many of our players just come along to one of our regular club 'roll ups' for a friendly game or two and a chat with friends, and most like to join in our quizzes and social lunches and parties. More.. Short Mat Bowls is played on a green ‘rink mat’ 40 – 45 feet in length but only 6 feet wide with the added difficulty of having to avoid hitting the 15 inch wide block of wood placed dead centre of the mat. This means that you have to bowl wide enough to miss the block but narrow enough so as not to go off the side of the mat. The skill is to use the natural bias of the bowl to curve around the block and get as close to the jack as possible. More..
Atte Bower Short Mat Bowls Club has a team playing in the Essex Short Mat Bowls League. They came first in the second division in 2022 and now play in the 1st division in 2022/23 season. Although we like to win, we really just enjoy the matches that are always played in a spirit of friendly rivalry. We also like to play friendly matches in the summer, and meet other clubs at league functions such as quiz nights. More..
